Official launch of the platform emergency.lu
On 7 December in New York, the Minister for Development Cooperation and Humanitarian Affairs, Mrs Marie-Josée Jacobs officially launched emergency.lu in the presence of representatives of the United Nations and Member States.
emergency.lu is a comprehensive, integrated telecommunications platform, designed to help the humanitarian community and civil protection teams in the field to (re) establish telecommunications services to ensure communication and coordination with rescue teams. The platform provides the infrastructure and satellite capacity, as well as communications terminal and the logistics necessary for rapid deployment in response to natural disasters or man-made crises
emergency.lu was initiated as a public-private partnership by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Luxembourg in collaboration with HITEC Luxembourg, SES TechCom and Luxembourg Air Ambulance. It was developed in close collaboration with the World Food Programme in support of its mission as a leader in the field of telecommunications in humanitarian emergencies. It has been coordinated with major international organizations such as the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs United Nations (UNOCHA) and the European Union, together with actors of the civil society and the private sector, including Ericsson Response and Skype.
emergency.lu aims to serve as a global public good. Its first deployment will take place in Mogadishu, Somalia by the end of 2011. Further deployments are planned in the Republic of South Sudan in the early months of 2012.
