The Eco-Friendly Pro-Poor Bamboo Production project aims to offer sustainable revival of livelihoods in post-disaster Sichuan, China.

During the last week of October 2011 the Benelux Chamber of Commerce is organizing an Investor's Study Tour to the bamboo industry in Sichuan. This 6-day study tour, taking place between October 28 and November 3, will provide the attendees with a balanced picture of the bamboo investment opportunities in Sichuan.

The Eco-Friendly Pro-Poor Bamboo Production project is financed by the European Commission's SWITCH programme, and is a cooperation between INBAR  (International Network for Bamboo and Rattan), the Sichuan Forestry Department , the European Union Project Innovation Centre , and BenCham . One of the project's objectives is to promote the use of bamboo instead of wood or other non-renewable building materials in the reconstruction of post earthquake Sichuan, as bamboo has exceptional strength and high shock resistance. By enhancing the local bamboo industry the project aims to create employment and enhance the livelihood opportunities of the less fortuned in Sichuan. Striving for a more sustainable world, the project also promotes bamboo as an economically sustainable and eco-friendly construction material and as a resource for consumer goods.

The "Sichuan Investor Study Tour" in October is open to investors with an interest in using bamboo as a resource and to materials scientists. This fully funded tour offers exciting visitations to local bamboo plants and manufacturers using bamboo, as well as an extensive investment plan covering a wide range of attractive possibilities in the Sichuan bamboo industry. Furthermore, the study tour provides workshops with in-depth information to help investors understand the local market, and guidance in making the first step into Sichuan. The study tour also creates great networking opportunities with local SME's, universities, and local government and investment bureaus.
