Chinese Character on house of former Prime Minister Pierre Werner in Luxembourg

Published Thursday July 16 2015

The Chinese character for good fortune is set in stone above the door of the current Czech Embassy in Luxembourg. This beautiful property has previously been owned by Pierre Werner, one of Luxembourg's most significant statesmen, and before that by Eugène Ruppert. Ruppert was one of pioneers in Sino-Luxembourgish relations. He lived in China during the late 19th century, when he helped set up and run a blast furnace at Hanyang. After having spent several in the Far East, Ruppert came back to Luxembourg, where he was nicknamed "de Chinees" (the Chinese), by his fellow compatriots.

To this day, Ruppert is seen as a pioneer, who was one of the first foreign engineers to have helped set up China's iron and steel industry.
