Statement by the Head of Delegation of the European Union to China on the increasing use of arbitrary detention in China
The Delegation of the European Union to China is concerned by the increasing use of arbitrary detention against human rights defenders, lawyers and activists in China.
Our attention has been brought lately to the case of Ai Weiwei, a well-known artist who reportedly went missing at the weekend after attempting to board a plane to Hong Kong.
We call on the Chinese authorities to refrain from using arbitrary detention under any circumstances.
